Why do we love Owls so much?

Owls are very fashionable right now and the reason is not hard to fathom. They are cute but austere little fluffy friends with huge round eyes. They fly gracefully in the dark under the moonlight creating an enigmatic aura about them.

They have awesome vision and are very wise as we all know and are very formidable predators. The way they glare around with their big eyes that seldom blink give them an air of mystery. They are able to rotate their heads around 360 degrees without moving another muscle in their bodies.

Whatever it is we love about them, they are here to stay if we have anything to with it and Party Peeps has found a very charming collection to celebrate these magnificent creatures. Check out the awesome photography of Scott Hervieux and other Owl designs here....

How to find inspiration for gag cartoons and sell them (Part 2)

In this post, I'd like to touch on the fine art of milking. Milking is as old as the hills. It can also be a very useful way of breaking into the market. In the UK we used to have a National paper that encouraged it as part of a feature called: "Sunfun", and it was great fun to see how many different variations could come out of a common gag. Private Eye magazine does this to a certain extent as well with typical themes running such as:"Are you looking at my bird?" which has been seen portrayed in many a scenario.

They are well recognized as milking gags and that is the whole idea behind the humor. I love looking at other cartoonists work and thinking how I can turn it around from say, a single panel gag to a strip for example, or from a mag gag to a greeting card. I consider it a challenge to go one better than them. You've all seen the poor old hanging prisoners and the desert Island gags. The possibilities for milking are endless and can generate a wealth of material.

Consider this:

* Neighborly wives gossiping by the fence. (eg. "You won't believe what you've been up to!")
* Hubby catching Wife in bed with stranger or vice- versa.
* Learner drivers.
* Cupid/ Dating Agency.
* Relate/ Marriage guidance.
* Desert Island. (Yes, I reckon you can still get away with the odd one these days!)
* Beauty Salon.
* Tunnel of love.
* Hubby and Wife at party- either chatting up someone else of the opposite sex.
* Mr. and Mrs. Smith booking into Hotel.
* Suicidal person (usually a Man!) on ledge.
* Lottery ticket.
* Your dinner is in......(Note left for Hubby)
* Wife's cooking.
* Nudist Colony.
* Dog and Postman. * Dog in Pub. * Dogs/ Toilet water.
* Hubby returning from Pub.
* Adam and Eve.
* Lost Property Department. * Missing Person's Bureaux. * Suggestions box.
* Just married.
* Interview/ Employment Agency.
* Birds and bees speech.
* Mum gone out and Dad and kids trying to cope.
* Wife visiting Hubby in jail. * Man in Pub talking to Barmaid. "My wife doesn't understand me."
* Estate Agents.
* "Does my bum look big in this?" (Goldmine, this one!")
* Prisoners hanging from chains. (Very well documented)
* Trying on clothes in shop.
* Mother in Law.
* Failure in bed.
* Not remembering Anniversary.
* Hospital. (Nil by mouth notice.)
* Party animal. * Noah's arc.
* Couple lying on beach- Man ogling better looking female.
* Internet shopping.
* Affairs.
* Selling matches. * Hobos on park bench.
* Lovers' Lane.
* Drunk and Cop.
* Groom late for Wedding.
* Dad with face buried in newspaper at breakfast table. (eg. "Mum, what does Dad look like?")
* Stag party/ Hen night.
* Excuse to go to the Pub. * Hubby couch potato/ no exercise/ no fresh air but got Sky television.
* Door to door salesman.
* Perfume counter in shop.
* Fridge magnets.
* Dad giving Daughter's date a hard time. * Report card.
* "Waiter, there's a fly in my soup!"
* Milkman/ Father's eyes.
* Rapunzel.

*BTW....does my bum look big in this?

How to find inspiration for gag cartoons and sell them (Part 1)

How to get ideas for drawing Cartoons that sell.

 Funny Social Media Cartoon Postcards

If you are serious about cartooning and you really have a desire to know why didn't I think of that? then stay tuned... Nobody is blessed with the gift of coming up with jokes or cartoon ideas at will. Like a lot of things it has to be worked at, struggled with, and sweated over and basically practised a lot.

Some of the tools used are:

1. Memory Maps
2. Puns/ Thesaurus (A play on words)
3. Observation of real life. (Misery turned into humor)
4. Exaggeration
5. Milking (Observation of other cartoonist's gags and coming up with a better alternative)

Personally, I keep any scrap of paper and blunt pencil wherever I go for prosperity. I could be sitting in an ordinary dead end Job or simply walking down the Street and an idea will just come to me that is going to make me an absolute fortune (This happens a lot). It's important though, the memory is only so good and you if you are anything like me, you'll be kicking yourself for ages for not writing it down. It may not appear to look so good when you come to execute it but then you can shelf it for when that original inspiration sparks a trigger in your head. So don't give up your day job just yet then.....

I try to set myself a goal everyday of jotting down at least 10 "potential gags". Don't let them tell you there is no room at the top. There are some big players out there paying top dollar for cartoon gags. These include The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, Harvard Business Review, Playboy and Barrons who pay up to $650 a gag. Research these markets and get a feel for what they publish.

Funny Beer Goggles funny cartoon

Think Greetings cards! Take a good look at the extensive list on Kate Harper's blog. I started submitting works to some of these Card Companies and in less than four months I had publishing credits in Noble Works, Smart Alex and Hello Turtle! Look for the Companies that pay out Royalties, usually 5-8% of sales and paid out Quarterly)  I'm hoping that over time I can build up enough Royalties to become a man of leisure.

Just as it is possible to improve our own drawing ability, so is it with thinking - there are techniques which can be learned, and which will raise the level of your cartooning to a professional standard, worthy of publication.

 Funny Cartoon Birthday Card

1. Your ears.

Listen to jokes and the comedy shows on telly and think how you may be able to adjust them in a way that you think would look good in print. Start a joke collection, they can be very cheesy but you'll be surprised what could be accepted by an unsuspecting Editor! Your greatest source of inspiration is PEOPLE. Everyday jokes or basic banter can be a very rich source of inspiration.

Watch Eastenders (or the Jerry Springer Show if you are in the US) for 5 minutes and draw from the misery of life.......they love it! We are as Cartoonists (or potentially so), are basically in the Entertainment Industry and these things can collide.*Adapt* jokes to portray them in a visual form.

2. Use your eyes.

So often we walk, and even drive around, oblivious to our surroundings. They become so familiar to us that we switch off to what's happening. As a cartoonist, you are a hunter - on the lookout for the unusual, the interesting, the zany, and the plain ridiculous. ITS A JUNGLE OF IDEAS OUT THERE, so be prepared and be alert!
Learn how to look at your surroundings with new eyes and jot things down. Not everything you try to capture will lead on to finished work, but some of it certainly will, surely?

3. Reading.

This is a good habit anyway, and for cartoon inspiration, it is an excellent way to pick up ideas......from newspapers, books, mags, the internet etc. It doesn't take a lot to spark an idea. Tell all your friends you are now in the cartooning business, and ask them to save any good jokes for you. They'll love it when you show them your finished version, and they will be chuffed to see it in print, or indeed, on the web!

4. Joke situations.

You may think your life is boring, but humor can be derived from boredom to a very big extent. A large proportion of cartoons are actually derived from the very ordinary things in life. The list of potential joke situations is endless, although sometimes you may have to strain your brain to think of them. Let's take "Driving" as a very random example. Here are a few:

* Braking too slowly/ too fast/ brakes don't work/ brakes working too well.
* Bumpy roads/ sticky roads (melting tarmac)
* Hand signals
* Reversing
* Parking problems/ fitting in a space that's too small for a car
* Juggernauts in narrow streets
* Hand- brake problems
* Car radio too loud/ powerful speakers
* Road rage/ being cut off.
* New car/ showing off.
* Two- car families.
* Car wash problems
* "Name strips" on windscreens or "Racing strips".
* Gear changing
* Car mechanics/ estimates/ repairs. (What's the damage?)
* Emergency stop.
* Traffic Wardens (a potential goldmine, this one!)
* The idiot who has to be first away from traffic lights.
* Driving gloves/ driving socks?
* Failing the MOT. A sluggish nodding dog?
* Pelican crossings/ Zebra crossings
* Customized cars.
* Driving abroad on the wrong side of the road.
* Flash cars.
* Back seat drivers/ passengers.
* Flat or bald tires/ traffic Cop,
* Oil change/ dip stick
* One way streets
* Road works.
* Traffic jams/ rush hour.
* Squashed hedgehogs.
* Accessories. (I pad, hands free mobile phone, Satnav etc)
* Flat battery/ road signs/ Highway code.
* Taxi drivers
* Hard shoulder.
* Roundabouts
* Police cars.
* The fanatic who washes his car everyday, regardless of the weather.
* Car salesman.
* Air bags.
* Window stickers/ Is my driving ok?/ My other car is a.....
* Towing/ stalling at traffic lights/ speeding/ crawling.
* Learner drivers
I could go on and on. But you get the idea?

 Funny passed driving test cartoon card

Narrow them down to "Car Salesman" and I'll give you:

*Part exchange
*Previous owners
*Turning back the clock
*Hire purchase
*"Or nearest offer"
*"Needs slight attention"
*No reasonable offer refused

So you never need to be stuck for potential joke situations....YOU CAN USE THIS SAME METHOD FOR ANY SUBJECT WHATSOEVER.

When you've got the situation eg: Car salesman, and then a sub- heading, eg: "Previous owners", think how the situation might be depicted if the previous owner was a Vicar, or a builder or a Google millionaire for that matter.

This is an excellent way to come up with ideas- by sharing it with your friends at a dinner party. Once they get wind of the fact that you are soon to become famous and make a fortune as a cartoonist, they are all going to want a piece. It beats Twister or Charades in my opinion and you may even come away with a few ideas for potential gags. Use the letters of the alphabet:

Jammy tarts
Light bulbs/ blonds
You get the picture?

Let's go back to the encyclopedia salesman and explore the possibilities there......what possible obstacles could he meet? What tricks could he employ to get his foot in the door? What sort of person could open the door to him? What reason could the occupant have for not wanting the encyclopedias? What sort of thing would a child say to him? How would he react to a Rottweiler?

A few reminders

Don't worry if all you can think of is "corny" jokes. Sometimes they can be the best one's
If you are struggling with ideas, don't stress, it's life.
Use your eyes....and ears
Collect jokes from TV/ radio/ friends etc

An invaluable source of how to do this is "The Cartoonists Bible", The Cartoonist's Muse. A very good read!

How to use Instagram on a PC

Well now I DO have a Smartphone but being old school, I don't really have a license to drive it and have only just got my head round swiping the little green phone icon towards the middle in order to answer the thing. I can however run circles around anybody on a PC.

I know this subject is quite a bone of contention among a lot of people and it is very well documented on the web, but I thought I would share my experience with you for prosperity and make it as simple as possible for the layman to understand. I am not an authority on the subject by any means and I only just started this exercise yesterday. It can appear a bit daunting at first but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and FUN!

Yes, I googled the subject, and the general consensus was that it can be done by downloading bluestacks which is just what I went ahead and did...

Once you have installed it, simply type "instagram" in the search thingy and tap the magnifying glass. Then select it, and install the app.

Now call me dumb, but I can't for the life of me figure out the next step (3) of the advice given here (which is where I am getting most of this info from) Workaround lets you upload Instagram photos from your desktop computer...Quote:"3. To upload a photo from your desktop, click the camera button, then select the polaroid icons in the lower-right of the app window. This will prompt you to select a photo from your drive. (If you use Instagram on Android, this entire process will be familiar.) Then, edit and upload the photo as usual." (This picture taken from the article)

I'm running Widows 7 and I'm not entirely sure if that is an issue but my Bluestacks looks totally different to that and I don't see any polaroid icons (or even on that one for that matter). If you do on yours, then good luck to you and you can take it from there! If you know why I can't see them, I would really appreciate you telling me in comments. So anyway, being ex-Navy that I am, I am of the psyche that a smooth sea never made a skilled Sailor so I am up for this challenge! This is my view of the camera...

I can't see those suggested apps on the right or any of those other icons at the bottom. Of course, I tinkered around a bit and even downloaded Bluestacks2 in case I was missing something there, only to to be told that I already had it so. Using my own initiative, I did however work out that I could go into the Gallery (bottom left button) and drag an image from my desktop into it. I'm not sure if I invented that or what but it worked! This subsequently enabled me to at least get my logo for my profile picture on Instagram but now that is sooooo last week and I can't recall exactly how I did that!

Exploring the interface, I come across a little folder icon on the left hand side called "Copy files from Windows" and tap it. I am now prompted to choose a file from my computer and so I proceed to do so.

Then what happens is you are prompted to "Complete action using" we select Instagram from the list of options.

Wow! There's my pic on Instagram and now I'm really getting excited! Please bear with me if this is old news as I'm doing this tutorial as I'm learning to make it as clear as humanly possible to myself as well for prosperity so excuse me while I think out loud.

Right so what next? I don't see an option to add text to comment on my image!!! Right now so I am about to throw in the towel and resort to the fact that this is a fruitless exercise. Who ever heard of using Instagram on a PC anyway riiight? Lol. But now I hear that this can be achieved with a thing called Dropbox but I am looking for the fast fix and this is all getting a bit too complicated for me. Go for that if you like and I'd appreciate any feedback on your experience.

So I read up on the subject a little more and Voilà!...I stumbled on a very tidy little alternative that does not enjoy the same hype as Bluestacks but for me it's the business! It's called Gramblr and it's like a breath of fresh air! here's the thing...

Once you have Gramblr's photo uploader (version 1), you just:
1. Sign in to Instagram
2. Choose the photo you would like to upload
3. Add a caption
4. Hit upload
*5. If the text boxes are empty on the confirmation window, something went wrong... try again and it should work!

* Which is precisely what happened to me so bear in mind this is a glitch so I am wondering if perhaps it may be worth looking at Gramblr v2? (You must register to Gramblr and then follow the steps.) Anyway, don't get disheartened if you now get this popping up on your screen...

Just press OK or Send Report and Continue. Keep doing this until you get this window and you can quite happily drag your piccy across into it.

Now we are on a roll...

I SAVE and then *** and hey presto!

Immediately? Yes....SEND!!! Free "Likes"? For real!!!

Upload Complete

Your photo will now appear in your Instagram Profile.
We have received your confirmation, your photo will receive the specified amount of likes....bring it on! Facebook? Twitter? Buy coins? I'll check that out later...I'm way too excited now to worry about that for now. I wanna see how it looks online (I have subsequently added more of course as I cannot leave it alone)

One may have noticed that just to be clever, I typed: "I hope you are enjoying this Instagram on PC Tutorial as much as I am" and now I can't see a way to edit my caption doh!

Remember that thing called the Bluestack or something like that? I think I still have it on my machine! it wasn't a waste of time after all as I have now discovered that I can edit my caption from here. So if you ever need to do this, open up Bluestacks and find the post that you want to edit. To find your post in the feed, you will have to tap on anywhere in the black area and scroll down with your keyboard down arrow until you come to it.

I have followed all my Facebook contacts so I have have to go down my my feed a bit until I find it. Sorry if I am being glaringly obvious again but you are looking at someone who has never even seen Instagram on a phone, never mind a PC.

I read somewhere that there is a  three little dots icon at the bottom right hand side of the post that can be tapped to edit a caption and I can only just make them out without straining my eyes as of course because Instagram was designed for them pesky phone things, the text is minuscule.

So I grab my reading glasses and restore the window up as such to get a full-screen view and see what's going on. Then I tap the dots icon and I get the option to edit my caption.

You will discover that this is a very finicity (is that a word?) process. There's a little blue cursor thing that appears when I tap at the end of my text and so I go with my keyboard backspace button until it is cleared. I already have the description I want copied from Notebook and so I just paste (Ctrl V) it in  and hit the little blue "Tick" icon at the top right hand side of the post and I'm good to go.

I hope you have enjoyed this Tutorial as much as I have doing it and taken some knowledge if not all away from it. If you want to dispute anything or indeed have a better method, please feel free to post in comments. Oh....and if you are at all partial to doughnuts, you may want to consider purchasing our (I just love referring to myself in the 3rd person as it makes us sound like a huge company lol) super Funny Donut (sic) Chef Green Gingham Wall Clock! (weeell, I had to do at least one plug after all that didn't we?)
